What Are Camera Drivers?
Whenever you connect a third party or external device to your computer, you need your machine to connect and communicate with that device. Otherwise, there is very little point in connecting it in the first place, is there?
If you therefore want to connect a digital camera or video recorder to your machine so that you can download pictures and movies, then you need drivers installed that will allow that operation to take place.
Generally speaking, this driver program will come with the camera when you buy it (generally on a CD) or, failing that, it is usually available for download from the web site of the camera manufacturer in question.
How To Update Camera Drivers
Keep in mind that as Windows updates itself regularly, you will also need to update your drivers. Sadly, this means you'll have to visit each device manufacturers website in hopes of finding the most up to date driver (drivers on your CD's are now outdated). What a headache!
As an excellent alternative, you can download the free ‘Driver Installer’. This program will detect all of the devices that you have installed on your machine at the same time, and direct you to the proper driver, which will save you a lot of effort and time.
Troubleshooting Camera Drivers
Perhaps surprisingly, these driver programs are quite often relatively complex, and therefore they can be prone to problems and errors.
So, if you try to download pictures to your machine and are not successful in doing so, you need to start with some basic checks.
First, confirm that the driver that you have installed is the right one. In these days when model numbers are becoming increasingly complex, it is quite easy to download a driver for a 777XSI when what you really need is a 777XSJ driver.
I have even seen examples where the manufacturer puts the wrong driver on the original installation CD, so check that too!
Repair and Update Camera Drivers
First, check that all of your connections are working properly and that there are no loose cables, for example. If you are connecting via a USB cable, check that the USB port you are connecting through is working properly from the ‘Device Manager’ of your machine (‘Control Panel’, ‘System’, ‘Hardware’ and then ‘Device Manager’).
In the same ‘Device Manager’, you should also see the camera that you are trying to connect.
Double click it and see whether it tells you what the problem is, because if it is a driver problem, it may specifically state that fact.
Try rebooting your machine and restarting it in ‘safe mode’, and then uninstall the driver that is causing you the problems. Then try re-installing it to see whether that makes a difference.
You should also try updating the driver as well, because most manufacturers do issue updated versions on a fairly regular basis. When they do so, it is generally with a version that contains less ‘bugs’ than the previous one, so that may well solve your problem.
It will then fix all of the drivers that have become damaged or that contain errors, and update those that have become similarly outmoded.
And, as suggested, to update your drivers use this handy utility. It is not going to cost you a single cent to try to the program out, so there really is no reason why you should not do so immediately.
